HOW TO REPORT AN ABSENCE
If your child will not be in school, be sure to call the school office absence line at (847) 870-3876.
WEEKLY NEWS
A newsletter/weekly update will be sent home at the beginning of almost every week. Please be sure to check your child’s Home Folder for the weekly update to find out what the skills and concepts that will be covered during the week and for important weekly and upcoming events.
HOMEWORK
Homework for first grade includes daily practice of weekly high frequency (sight) words, spelling words, math facts, at home reading, and math home links. The students are also responsible for the weekly "Activity Board" that will be sent home on Mondays and due the following Monday. On occasion, things may come up that prevent your child from returning his/her work on the due date. If this happens, please send a note stating that your child needs an extra day to complete the assignment. If your child is absent, missed work will be sent home upon his/her return. Please have your child complete the work and return it within a few days.
SNACKS
Children enjoy snack time! You are welcome to send a healthy snack to school with your child each day. The snack should be able to be consumed within about 5 minutes and packed separately from your child’s lunch. Due to food allergies, morning snacks are limited to fresh fruit (bananas, apple slices, grapes, strawberries, peeled orange sections), raisins, fresh vegetables (no dips), or string cheese. Please be sure that your child is able to open any containers independently. Please do not send crackers or items that make crumbs - they encourage little visitors. Water bottles are allowed but please do not send any colored drinks. Don’t forget a napkin!
BIRTHDAYS
Your child’s birthday is an important event! On the special day, children are encouraged to bring a favorite book from home or choose one from our classroom library that I will read aloud to the class. The children will also sing the birthday song and make birthday cards for the birthday boy or girl! If your child has a summer birthday, you may have him/her celebrate close to his/her half birthday or choose another day. Please do not wait until June as it is a very busy month! If your family does not celebrate birthdays, please let me know.
