LITERACY
Reading
Your child should be reading for at least 20 minutes each night or for a total of at least 2 hours each week. This can include you reading to your child and/or listening to your child read to you. As your child's reading skills get stronger, more of his/her reading can be done independently and silently. Your child should be signing off on this reading time on his/her weekly "Activity Board" homework sheet. This at home reading time is counted towards his/her "reads independently" grade on the report card.
High Frequency Words (Sight Words)
Each week, your child will bring home high frequency (sight) word cards from our weekly story. Your child should cut out these words, practice reading them, and store them on his/her word ring.
Spelling
The children take a spelling pretest (a test on words that have not been practiced) each Monday. Monday through Thursday students will practice the lesson concept during group, partner, and independent activities. There will be a final test on Friday. Children who spell all or most of the words correctly on the weekly spelling pretest will be given a list of challenge words to learn for that week. On Friday, those students will be tested on the list of challenge words.
Writing
Each week (usually on Mondays) we will be writing and illustrating an entry in our "Weekend Journals." Please make sure your child brings back the Weekend Journal prompt sheet on Mondays so he/she has his/her ideas organized and is prepared to write about a topic.
MATH
Everyday Math Home Links will come home at least 3 times each week. Please supervise your child as they complete these math exercises to be sure they are understanding the concepts. You can find the answers in the Family Letter at the beginning of each unit in the Home Link Journal. The Home Link workbook, with the assigned page(s) completed, is to be returned the next day. Please keep all Home Links and Parent Letters in your child's Home Link workbook for reference.
Your child should be practicing the addition and subtraction math facts as often as possible. During the 2nd and 3rd Trimesters, the students will be taking weekly timed math fact tests in order to assess their ability to quickly recall the facts.
